Lufthansa Cargo and the logistics company Röhlig Logistics announced their partnership to protect the climate and offer their customers a sustainable transport service on selected routes.
Within the framework of this agreement, Röhlig Logistics will invest in certified compensation programs for CO2 emissions that occur during the transport of air cargo. The company initially committed to decarbonizing air cargo on four selected routes, which would represent a compensation of about a thousand tons of CO2.
Philip W. Herwig, the Managing Partner of Röhlig Logistics, said: “Röhlig is committed to promoting sustainability in all of its business activities and decision-making processes. We are therefore particularly pleased to be a partner of Lufthansa Cargo and to take a measurable step forward in our sustainability efforts with this commitment. Effective immediately, we offer our customers CO2-neutral freight transport on certain routes. With this, 100% of the CO2 emissions are offset by supporting projects of the international and non-profit organization for climate protection myclimate».
Although they do not prevent CO2 emissions in air operations, compensation programs have been implemented around the world as a strategy to mitigate the environmental impact of the activity. The strategy implies the creation of forest environments that offset these emissions.
Dorothea von Boxberg, CEO of Lufthansa Cargo, stated that “our goal is to become the most sustainable air cargo airline. That's why we're investing in a modern fleet, innovations like the AeroShark, which reduces air resistance, and cutting-edge lighter cargo equipment. These investments contribute to considerably reducing our CO2 emissions. On the other hand, we offer our clients sustainable transport solutions that reduce the remaining carbon footprint. In addition to sustainable aviation fuel, this also includes offsetting CO2 emissions by investing in high-quality climate protection projects."
CO2 emissions from cargo transported by Lufthansa Cargo on behalf of Röhlig Logistics will be 100% offset on these routes:
From Frankfurt (FRA) to Atlanta (ATL)
From Frankfurt (FRA) to Mexico City (MEX)
From Frankfurt (FRA) to Shanghai (PVG)
From Hong Kong (HKG) to Frankfurt (FRA)
Compensation for air cargo operations achieved by this project will be managed through Compensaid, the Lufthansa Group's digital platform for CO2-neutral flights.
